Kyoshi Bob Elder is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities on antique Japanese Swords and the ancient art of Swordsmanship. He is President and Founder of the U.S. Federation of Batto Do Inc. and President and Founder of U.S. Federation of Toyama-Ryu Batto Jutsu Inc. Kyoshi Bob Elder is a native Floridian who began his long journey in the martial arts in 1964 when he acquired a Trevor Leggett book on judo. Fascinated with what he learned, he gathered together all the blankets and sheets in the house, bound them together into a mat, and practiced falling, rolling, and throwing with his brother and sister. Years later he began the study of Isshin Ryu Karate under the direction of Sensei Bob Bremer of Miami. Sensei Bremer had lived in Okinawa as a civilian for several years and trained directly under the founder of Isshin Ryu Karate, Sensei Tatsuo Shimabukuro. Sensei Bremer was an enlightened teacher who was able to convey much more than martial technique. It was here that Kyoshi Elder first learned the true meaning of martial arts "Way" or the "Do". He considered Sensei Bremer's martial insight his "Guiding Light" and has endeavored to incorporate these principles into his own current training and teachings.

Kyoshi Elder began dealing in Japanese swords around 1979. Kyoshi Elder met Sensei Misuo Hataya, a sword dealer and master swordsman, at a Houston Sword Show. Kyoshi Elder then invited Sensei Hayata to Orlando the following year, prior to the Tampa Sword Show. This was the visit that began Kyoshi Elder's life long dedication to the ancient art of Swordsmanship. He has been devoted to bringing the spirit of swordsmanship and competition to the United States.

Kyoshi Elder is currently a 6th degree black belt in Toyama-Ryu Batto Dan. He had been awarded his Sensei title by Sensei Hayata in 2002. He has hosted an annual cutting Taikai is Orlando for the last several years. The popularity of these events grow in size and spirit each year.

Kyoshi Elder now resides in Orlando, Florida with his wife and son where he runs the daily operations of East Coast Martial Arts Supplies, which carries the most elite swords for training and collecting. He is undisputably one of the world's leading authorities on Japanese antique swords having been a collector and dealer for more than 30 years.
